TL;DR?
Algospeak uses coded language and alternative spellings to reduce the risk of triggering social media content filters.
Sex-positive businesses can use it to discuss sex, pleasure, sexual health and adult products.
Content moderation can also be affected by hashtags, on-screen text, audio and images.
Algospeak isn't a guaranteed fix for censorship, shadowbanning or reduced reach.
The key is to be strategic with your wording without compromising your brand voice.
If you run a sex-positive business, create adult content or work in the sexual wellness industry, you'll probably know that talking about sex on social media isn't always straightforward.
You can be sharing completely legitimate information about pleasure, sexual health, intimacy or relationships, only to find your content restricted, removed or seemingly invisible.
And that's where algospeak comes in.
What is algospeak?
Algospeak is coded language used by social media creators to avoid triggering automated content moderation systems and potentially having their content flagged, restricted or removed.
It's essentially changing the words you use so that you can still communicate your message without using terminology that might trigger platform filters.
You've probably seen it everywhere without even realising.
Some examples include:
These are just examples of language creators use. There is no guaranteed list of safe words, and platforms can still recognise the meaning through context, images, audio and other signals.
Why do sex-positive businesses need to use algospeak?
If you're a sex-positive business, your content is naturally going to include words that some social media platforms consider sensitive.
Think about how often you might need to talk about:
Sex and sexual health.
Vaginas, vulvas and penises.
Orgasms and masturbation.
Sex toys and pleasure products.
BDSM and kink.
Porn and adult content.
Intimacy and sexual relationships.
These are perfectly legitimate subjects, but depending on the platform, context and type of content, they may affect recommendation eligibility or trigger moderation.
The problem is that you don't always know which words, images or combinations might cause an issue.
This is why creators have started adapting their language.
How to censor your content without losing your message
The trick is to be strategic about your wording rather than simply removing every reference to sex.
Here are some things you can try:
1. Replace certain letters
Try using alternative spellings, numbers or symbols in words you are concerned might trigger automated filters.
Examples:
Sex becomes s3x or seggs.
Porn becomes corn.
Vagina becomes v@gina.
Nude becomes n*de.
2. Use alternative terminology
Sometimes you can communicate exactly the same message using different wording.
For example:
Instead of masturbation, try self-pleasure.
Instead of talking about sexual intercourse, discuss intimacy.
Instead of using explicit product descriptions, focus on pleasure, wellbeing and education.
3. Think about your hashtags
Hashtags are another part of your content that deserves attention. Make sure they are relevant and comply with the platform's rules. Avoid relying on hashtags that are restricted or associated with content that isn't permitted.
4. Look at your on-screen text
Remember that moderation isn't just about your caption. Platforms can assess text appearing in your videos, spoken audio, images and other content signals.
Think about your wording across the entire post, not just the written caption.
5. Keep your content educational and contextual
Rather than simply listing sexual terminology or promoting a product, explain what you're discussing and why it matters.
For example, a post about understanding your anatomy, sexual wellbeing or exploring pleasure can give your audience useful context.
Importantly, changing words doesn't guarantee that content will avoid moderation. Algospeak is a communication strategy, not a way to bypass platform rules.
Does algospeak prevent shadowbanning?
Not necessarily!
Using alternative terminology doesn't guarantee that your content will be recommended or that your account won't face restrictions.
Social media platforms consider much more than individual words when moderating content.
However, understanding algospeak, knowing your platform's guidelines and being intentional about your language can help you make more informed decisions about your content.
And remember, a drop in engagement doesn't automatically mean you've been shadowbanned.
Check your account status, recommendation eligibility and any notifications from the platform rather than relying on reach alone.
Don't let censorship silence your business
The reality is that sex-positive businesses have to think differently about social media.
We want to talk openly about sex, pleasure, intimacy and sexual wellbeing, but we also need to understand the platforms we're using to reach our audiences.
Algospeak is one tool that creators have developed to navigate this environment.
But don't let it completely change your brand voice or stop you having important conversations.
You can be strategic with your wording while still being authentic, educational and unapologetically sex-positive.
