How to get started running your Spicy community on Discord

If you're running a sex-positive business, you already know that community is everything. Your audience isn't just buying content and discord, when set up properly, is one of the best tools available for creating that.

This guide walks you through exactly how to set up a Discord server for a sex-positive community: from your first channel to paid memberships, onboarding flows, and keeping things safe and well-moderated. And if at any point you'd rather hand it off entirely - we can run all of this for you - just get in touch!

Step One: Create Your Server

Head to discord.com and create a free account if you don't have one already. From your home screen, click the + icon in the left sidebar and select Create My Own server.

Give your server a name and upload a logo or icon - this is the first impression people get, so make it on-brand.

Once your server is created, you'll land in your new (very empty) space. Don't panic - we're about to build it out.

Step Two: Apply for Age-Restricted Community Status

Before you do anything else, you need to enable community features and mark your server appropriately for adult content.

Go to Server Settings > Enable Community. Follow the prompts - you'll need to set up a rules channel and a moderator announcements channel as part of this process.

Once Community Mode is enabled, go to Server Settings > Safety Setup and set your explicit content filter. For a sex-positive server, you'll want to turn off the auto-filter for NSFW channels, since you'll be managing that manually through your onboarding process.

Then, for any channel that will contain adult content, right-click the channel, go to Edit Channel, and toggle Age-Restricted Channel on. Members will have to confirm their age before viewing anything in that channel.

Step Three: Design Your Channel Structure

This is where most people get overwhelmed, so keep it simple to start. You can always add more channels later - it's much harder to tidy up a cluttered server than to grow an organised one.

A solid starting structure for a sex-positive community looks something like this:

Welcome & Info

  • #welcome - your intro message and server overview

  • #rules - community guidelines (more on this below)

  • #announcements - one-way channel where only you post updates

  • #start-here - onboarding instructions for new members

Community (Free)

  • #introductions - where new members say hello

  • #general-chat - open conversation

  • #resources - links, recommendations, educational content

  • #events - upcoming events, workshops, socials

Content

  • Set these channels as NSFW and gate them behind a verified role

  • Structure these however makes sense for your niche

Members Only (Paid Tier)

  • Premium content channels

  • Direct Q&A or advice threads

  • Exclusive announcements

Step Four: Set Up Your Onboarding Flow

This is the most important thing you'll do for your server, and the most overlooked. A good onboarding flow means every member who joins understands your community, agrees to your rules, and gets assigned the right roles before they access anything.

Go to Server Settings > Onboarding to set this up.

Your onboarding should include:

A rules agreement. Write clear community guidelines that cover: respect and consent, what content is and isn't permitted, how to report issues, and your policy on minors (zero tolerance, no exceptions). Require members to click to agree before they can access the rest of the server.

An age verification step. This can be as simple as a role-assignment button that reads "I confirm I am 18 or over" — clicking it assigns them a verified role and unlocks age-restricted channels. For higher-stakes communities, you may want to use a third-party verification bot (more on that below).

A short introduction prompt. Encourage new members to post in #introductions. It reduces lurking and immediately makes people feel like they're part of something.

Step Five: Use Roles to Control Access

Roles are Discord's access control system, and they're powerful. Every member can have multiple roles, and each role can have different permissions - including which channels they can see and post in.

Set up at least these three roles to start:

  • Unverified - assigned automatically on join, can only see welcome and rules channels

  • Verified - assigned after agreeing to rules, unlocks community and age-restricted channels

  • Member (Paid) - assigned to paying subscribers, unlocks premium content

You can expand this over time - moderator roles, VIP roles, event host roles — but starting simple keeps things manageable.

Step Six: Add the Right Bots

Bots are apps that run inside your Discord server and automate tasks you'd otherwise have to do manually. A few are genuinely essential for a sex-positive community.

MEE6 or Dyno - moderation bots that can auto-delete certain words or phrases, issue warnings, time out or ban users, and log activity. Essential for maintaining a safe space without you having to be online 24/7.

Carl-bot - excellent for setting up reaction roles (where members click an emoji to assign themselves a role — great for your age verification step) and for scheduling announcements.

Combot or Arcane - more advanced moderation with detailed logging, so you have a record of any incidents in your server.

Verification bots - if you want more robust age verification, tools like AgeID or Yoti integrate with Discord and require members to verify their age through a real ID check before accessing adult content.

Step Seven: Set Up Paid Memberships

Discord has two native options for monetising your server:

Server Subscriptions allow members to pay a monthly fee directly through Discord in exchange for a special role — which you then use to unlock premium channels. Discord takes a percentage, but the integration is seamless and members never have to leave the platform.

Patreon integration is often a better option for established creators, because it gives you more control over pricing tiers and you likely already have an audience there. Discord's Patreon integration automatically assigns Discord roles based on Patreon tier - so when someone subscribes on Patreon, they're automatically upgraded in your Discord server within minutes.

Most sex-positive businesses use Patreon (or a similar platform) for memberships and Discord for the community experience that comes with them.

Step Eight: Launch and Build

Before you open the doors, do a soft launch. Invite a small group of trusted people - existing community members, friends, colleagues - to test your onboarding flow, check the channel structure makes sense, and flag anything confusing or broken.

Once you're happy, promote your server on your other platforms. Link it in your Instagram bio. Mention it in your email newsletter. Share it with your OnlyFans subscribers. Give people a reason to join - a free resource, early access to something, an exclusive welcome event.

And then: show up. The biggest mistake people make with Discord is building the server and then going quiet. Post in your channels. Host your first voice event. Respond to introductions. Community is built through presence, not just infrastructure.

A Note on Moderation

Running a sex-positive community online comes with real responsibility. You are creating a space where vulnerable people will gather, share, and trust. That means you need to take moderation seriously.

Write your community guidelines carefully and enforce them consistently. Have a clear reporting system so members can flag issues privately. Don't moderate alone - recruit trusted community members as moderators. And keep records of any incidents, bans, or warnings.

Your community is only as safe as you make it.

Setting up a Discord server properly takes a day. Maintaining and growing it takes ongoing attention. But for sex-positive businesses serious about community, it's one of the most valuable investments you can make - a space that belongs to you and your people, where the relationship isn't mediated by an algorithm.

Start simple. Build as you grow. Show up consistently.

Or - don't do any of it yourself.
